From Parkland, Florida, Justin Gruber is currently completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music under Dr. Aaron Tindall.
In high school, Justin was a National YoungArts Winner, finalist in the New World Symphony Concerto Competition, and awarded the Kovner Fellowship from Juilliard. Justin also performed with the 13th Army Band of Florida as a substitute tubist and had numerous performances at the Curtis Institute and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, all while beginning his composing career at this early age.
In Justin’s first year of college, he won 3rd prize at Leonard Falcone International Tuba Artist Solo Competition. In addition, he became the principal tubist of the Frost Symphony Orchestra and received an orchestral fellowship at the Eastern Music Festival with Gerard Schwarz. Justin also became an Associate Member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra during this brief period.
In Justin’s second year, he won the New Mexico Philharmonic Principal Tuba Audition. Justin also placed semi-finalist in the Buffalo Philharmonic Audition, Richmond Symphony Orchestra Audition, the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Audition, and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra Audition. Justin also became a substitute with the Sarasota Orchestra.
Besides Justin’s prominent tuba career, he is an avid composer. He has numerous works for Band, Orchestra, and various chamber ensembles. Justin will also have two arrangements on an upcoming solo album of Dr. Aaron Tindall. These works include Prokofiev’s Cinderella and Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
